More often than not the beginnings of the average person's debt problems can be traced back to credit cards. In many cases people are borrowing to buy what they really can't afford. This is not to say that all the blame should fall on the individual. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that credit card companies mail out millions of credit card offers every year in the United States, including many to consumers who never would have qualified for credit 20 years ago. These offers are, of course, unsolicited and they create serious problems for a great number of families. Among the 78 percent of Americans with credit card debt, the total debt per household averages $8,400. With a typical interest rate of 14.5 percent. Those with credit payment problems will pay higher interest rates for home, auto and consumer loans.
The mistake many of us make is thinking, after charging something on a card, that we will pay it back later, but that day never comes. This is not the case for everyone. Industry surveys show that 40 percent of consumers pay off their credit cards in full each month. These individuals generally do very well. They get frequent flyer miles, and other benefits. The problem is that the other 60 percent to varying degrees are buried under or completely buried under a mountain of debt.
Consumers who fall behind or have less-than-perfect credit quickly see their interest rates increased to 20 or 25 percent plus penalty fees. These increases in rates, fees, and penalties create a "snowball effect" that for many consumers is impossible to reverse.
There are a few things you can do to avoid falling in the credit card debt trap. First, remember that most people only need one (or at the most two) cards. It should be a low rate card with a modest monthly fee, and if you've had problems managing credit card debt in the past use it sporadically. Charge only what you can pay off each month.
Remember, it's very easy to use the plastic, very easy to get yourself in trouble because you don't realize how much you're spending until is too late.
