Generally, accounts that are paid off through a credit counseling agency are not considered "charge offs". When working with a credit counseling agency, your creditors may agree to lower interest rates and eliminate fees to make it possible for you to pay off your accounts.
Creditors are willing to work with you in the way because they realize that credit counseling organizations improve the odds that the creditor will get most of the money owed on the account repaid, instead of losing it all by the card holder not paying it back at all.
Creditors typically write off (charge off) a debt if there has been no payment on the account for more than 180 days or six months.
When you go to credit counseling, your credit accounts will be closed and you will receive monthly statements from your creditors showing each payment that has been paid by your credit counselor. It is up to your creditors how the activity of your account is reported to the credit bureaus. The report will show that the client is going through a third party and that all accounts are closed.
Some of you might be wondering is if all the bad marks that were on your credit report before you began the credit counseling program, if that will go away. That all heavily depends on what your credit report looked like before you started the credit counseling program. Paying off what you owe will be a huge positive. However, any negatives that have already occurred such as late payments, non-payment or missed payments will remain on your report. The main goal is to stop creditors from reporting negative comments and show the account as current. Overall the credit counseling program has been a wonderful way for people to start rebuilding their credit and their lives successfully.
