Julian Credit Management: Try our Debt Consolidation Program!

The Young and their Debt
Pamela Socorro - October 25th, 2005

Saturday night I received an alarming phone call from one of my girlfriends, "I can't sleep at night, and when I do, I wake up nauseous. I can't take this anymore, the collection calls are making me sick..."

This is what Ms. Gunn, 23, frantically ranted into her telephone as I tried to explain that she was simply one among many young adults involved in a credit card disaster.

People under the age of 30 are filing for Bankruptcy in frightening numbers. Over a third of young adults own many different types of Credit Cards and are now finding themselves involved in debts ranging anywhere from $7,000.00 to $60,000.00 dollars.

This unfortunate scenario is not only taking place here in the United States, but also abroad, people between 20 to 30 years of age are ending up declaring insolvency cases all around the World. In Scotland, for example, sixty percent of bankruptcy cases involve people in their 20's.

Some say today's younger generation has become more materialistic and consumer-led spending on anything new regardless of price, particularly technological toys. Credit cards and loans are also being used to improve the standards of living for young adults in many different parts of the globe.

It has come to show that unemployment is not the primary factor of this crisis, most of these people are fully employed and attending school part time. So where is the problem?

The most debated argument is the lack of financial education required from students at both High School and College levels. Only seven states mandate that students take a course in basic finance to graduate from High School. However, it's surprising how much these credit card companies are allowed to advertise on college campuses all around the United States, giving away free T-shirts, lots of spending power, and future of overwhelming debt and nasty collection calls.

A report released by the non-profit organization Demos entitled, "Generation Broke: The Growth of Debt Among Young Americans", informed that over the past ten years credit card debt among 18 to 24 year olds rose 104 percent. In addition, the report found these indebted adults spend almost 30 cents of every dollar earned to repay debts.

In a nutshell, it is very unfortunate the number of desperate people out there trying to crawl out of their debt hole. It would be a better world if these young adults could begin their journey in the real world with much more knowledge protecting them.
