EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES: BUYING A CAR

When buying a car, the first thing to remember is that an automobile is depreciating asset.

That means that most cars will be worth less as they get older.

Therefore it is important when purchasing a car that you pay appropriate value and avoid financing whenever possible.

In my opinion, the best way to purchase an auto is to pay CASH or put at least a 20% down payment to reduce the interest rate.

Obtain a N.A.D.A book, which lists the going prices for the car in which your interested. When buying from a dealer, you should probably aim for 3%-4% over dealer wholesales (dealer invoice). Don´t trust no-haggle pricing. It is usually 6% over invoice.

Dealers will often find out from you as to what you can pay monthly, causing people to pay much more than the auto´s value. Avoid that trap by focusing on total price paid before monthly payments.

Leases may sometimes appear attractive because the monthly payments are usually lower. Lease are best suited for people who trade their auto every few years, use their car for business purposes (usually better tax considerations than individual ownership), drive short distances ( less than 10-15 thousand miles per year), and have a small down payment.

Before leasing find out the approximate insurance cost which is usually higher than buying. As in purchasing, the most important consideration is total lease cost.

Julian Credit Management is a firm that practices exclusively in the area of Bankruptcy and Debt Consolidation and has offices in Clearwater (Pinellas County), Port Richey (Pasco County), Tampa (Hillsborough County), Lakeland (Polk County) and Orlando (Orange County).
