Whether purchasing an automobile or buying a new carpet for your living room here are some tips towards the best deal possible:

Haggle late in the day because salesmen are more eager to close the deal
Buy in quantity
Pay in cash and ask for the "cash discount" (preferably at least 10%)
Be polite but cool and not over eager
Floor models usually warrant 15-30% discount. Check for scratches & other damage
And buy seasonally, meaning A/C units in winter & sweaters in the summer.
